The Winter That Wasn’t

January 18, 2012

It has been an odd fall/winter for most people, but for those who spend their days toiling outside and who have charted the weather day in and day out for decades of their life this has been a very perplexing time. The erratic nature of the weather; little to no snow, fast temperature changes causing flooding, record high temperatures, bouts of high winds from all directions, etc. all pose new challenges. We hope everyone is taking the chance to enjoy the good days and are also preparing for the bad ones.

Since the launch of the Niagara Queen II and it’s return to service we have been busy working in the yard - completing a 52’ house boat, cleaning up the yard (scrapping) and working on various small jobs that had piled up over the course of the last couple months. The pace has slowed considerably, which was a welcome change after the frantic push to get the Niagara Queen II back to water (in hindsight this is somewhat ironic as it is now January 18th and I doubt the ice breaker has had to break any ice yet.)

We hope everyone had a great holiday with friends and family and we wish everyone a happy and healthy 2012!

The Niagara Queen II Returned to Service - November 22nd 2011

December 13, 2011

Powell’s Shipyard returned the Niagara Queen II back over to Ontario Power Generation on Tuesday November 22nd, 2011. The boat arrived on August 2nd, 2011 and with a lot of hard work and some really great weather - the boat was returned to OPG on time and it great shape. The Queen and it’s crew are now doing training to ready themselves for ice breaking this Winter.

Busy Harbour

November 17, 2011

Our service of the Niagara Queen II hasn’t been the only excitement in Port Maitland Harbour this fall. Actually, it hasn’t even been the biggest excitement! Two decommissioned submarines were towed into harbour this fall over at the McKeil yard, which is being leased by Marine Recycling Corp. as they scrap the two vessels. Originally British submarines purchased by the Canadian Government, the subs had to make the long journey from Halifax to Port Maitland in order to be scrapped. It has been an interesting fall as we have met veterans who used to work on the submarine, tourists from all over, and a wealth of other people just interested in seeing a submarine up close.

We also witnessed the fire that broke out on board. It is never a good feeling to see an accident happening but being too far away to help. Thankfully no one was hurt and we hope the rest of the job is completed without injury or incident.

We Have Lift Off!

November 8, 2011

When Powell’s Shipyard was founded in 1987 it was founded on principles of respect, honesty, hard work and integrity. Those principles have stayed the same, but many other things have changed! The internet has so drastically changed and shaped the ways in which we communicate, learn and do business. This new website is our earnest attempt at building a site which is user-friendly, easily accessible and informative for anyone wanting to learn more about our business and what exactly our industry does. As we move forward, expect updates on current projects, detailed information about our yard as well as relevant information about the marine industry and what we see as the way forward. As we approach our 25th anniversary, we hope to use this site to chart our next 25 years!
